Liar, Liar Pants on Fire is a counseling game designed to help children understand the motivation for telling lies. It incorporates humor and psychoeducation to help children process various reasons they may tell lies and to process the consequences of doing so. The therapist is able to use this as a tool to open dialogue about untruthful behavior. The goal is to help normalize feelings, provide alternative behaviors, and give insight.
The game is played like Old Maid. You pass out all of the cards to the players. Each player will hold up their hand of cards for others to choose from. (Do not lay down pairs until you get a match from someone else's hand.) The first player will choose a card from an opponent's hand. If a match is found it can be placed on the table. The next player will then get a turn to select a card from another hand. This will continue until only the Liar, Liar Pants on Fire card remains. Whoever is left with it loses the round.
